For many parents, the years of raising children involve a delicate dance, fitting work around school runs, term times, and being the one who’s always available in a crisis. Some manage this by working part-time or freelancing. Others press pause on paid employment altogether. But once the children are grown or more independent, a window opens. And with it, a question: What now?

Returning to work after a long break can feel daunting. You might worry that your skills are out of date, or that the job market has moved on without you. Perhaps you’re unsure how to explain the gap on your CV, or even what kind of work you’d enjoy now.

But remember, you’re not starting from zero.

Parenting develops a wide range of transferable skills. You’ve likely handled logistics, conflict resolution, multitasking, crisis management, and emotional intelligence, all of which are valuable in any workplace. You’ve grown in confidence, adaptability, and problem-solving. These are assets, even if they weren’t gained in a traditional office.

That said, a little preparation helps. Start by identifying what you want from work now. Is it financial security? A sense of purpose? Social connection? Personal growth? The right opportunity will depend on your current priorities.

You may need to refresh your CV or brush up on digital tools. Online courses can be a low-cost, flexible way to upskill. Volunteering or short-term roles can help rebuild confidence and reintroduce you to professional environments.

Don’t underestimate the importance of mindset. Self-doubt is common, especially if others seem more experienced or confident. But remember: you bring life experience and maturity that many employers value. Your perspective, calm under pressure, and ability to see the bigger picture are not easily taught.

It’s also worth thinking about the kind of work culture that will suit you. After years of flexibility, do you want a traditional 9–5, or something more hybrid? Are you energised by a fast pace, or do you prefer a steadier environment? These questions matter as much as the role itself.

This isn’t just about re-entering the workforce. It’s about stepping into a new phase of life with curiosity and intention. You don’t have to prove yourself to anyone, but you can reimagine what your working life looks like now.

Many people who return to work after parenting find surprising new paths. They move into mentoring, care roles, creative industries, or start small businesses. There’s no fixed route. Just your next step, and that’s more than enough to begin.
